We have organized trial access to the Biomedical and Life Sciences Collection of Henry Stewart Talks seminar style audio visual presentationss by leading world experts. All the talks can be accessed directly at http://www.hstalks.com/trial/ or from the Trial Databases http://booleweb.ucc.ie/databases/trials.htm page on our website (from where you can also access any other current library database trial).

This Collection contains over 700 seminar style talks designed to meet the needs of researchers, postgraduates and the more advanced undergraduate.

It is suggested you start by watching the short introductory presentation View Intro Talk http://hst.streamuk.com/bsr/index.asp?chk=1 and then searching the database to find talks matching your particular research interests.

Database Trial: MIDIRS

UCC has a tial of the Maternity and Infant Care Database (MIDIRS) This database trial for up to 4 simultaneous users is available until 28th June 2007.

MIDIRS is a bibliographic database for midwifery. Its aim is to provide maternity health professionals with an overview of key midwifery and medical research to inform their practice. The information is gathered from over 550 international journals and original articles are commissioned on the hot topics being discussed by the midwifery profession.

Eating, Drinking and Carousing in Library

The Library at the Mercy University Hospital is located in what was originally the Mansion House, former residence of the Mayors of Cork. The building was designed in an Italianate style by the architect Davis Ducart and no expense was spared on its construction and fitting out. The magnificent stucco work, carried out in an elaborate Rococo style by Patrick Osborne of Waterford, remains remarkably intact. The building was completed around 1767. From early on the Mansion House became renowned for its magnificent balls, receptions and banquets, which were both lavish and frequent. But as the economy of the city declined in the early 19th century, the Corporation realised that it could no longer afford to subsidise such excess. The Mayor was relocated to a more humble abode and the Mansion House was handed over to the Church. The Mercy Hospital opened for business on St. Patrick’s Day 1857.

As part of our 150th anniversary celebrations, it was decided to hold two celebratory banquets in the hospital. And what more appropriate place to hold them than in the Library, which was the original dining room of the Mansion House? Mary Dunnion, Director of Nursing, hosted the first banquet to coincide with the inaugural National Nursing Conference and Professor Gerry O’Sullivan, current President of the Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland, hosted the other.

The Library received a total makeover for both occasions. The room was lit by large antique candelabras. To enter the Library was to take a step back in time to a more elegant age. And for once food was eaten and drink imbibed without any admonishment from Library staff, and not a single ssssshhhhhh was heard all evening.

Opening Hours - Brookfield

Brookfield Health Sciences Library opening hours have been finalised for the coming months.

In Term time we're open 9a.m. - 10:15 p.m. Monday - Friday and 9a.m. - 3:30p.m. Saturday & Sunday.

Over the summer from 1 June until 2 September we're open 9 a.m. - 8:30p.m. Monday - Friday and 9a.m. - 3:30p.m. on Saturdays.

Laptops in Basement

We have received complaints from users of the Basement in Brookfield Health Sciences Library that the keyboard clicking of wireless laptops is causing irritation. In response we have created a delimited area for laptop use in the Basement in the hope this may deal with the problem.

We hope to get full cooperation from laptop users in this experiment. We would be very pleased to get any feedback from you on how well this experiment is working – has it solved the problem or are there other possibilities?

New staff ID card is Library Membership card

With the introduction of the new UCC Staff ID card it has become possible for us to help lighten the load you have to carry!

For several years now students have needed only their UCC ID card to avail of library services; however, staff members had to register and carry a separate piece of plastic. The introduction of the new staff ID card allows you to change that.

Any member of staff who wishes to change over can do so on their next visit to the library - just mention it to library staff and produce your new ID card - we'll make the change over in a couple of seconds and you can throw away the old library membership card.

UK PubMed Central set up!

Since January 2007 biomedical researchers have been able to submit their own published results and papers for inclusion in a new online resource.

UK PubMed Central is based on the model currently used by the US National Institute of Health providing free access to an online archive of peer-reviewed research papers in the medical and life sciences.
